Radarsign in the News: Donation of Two Radar Speed Signs Honors the Work of Cobb County Crossing Guard Killed in the Line of Duty

MARIETTA, Ga., June 6, 2018In November 2017, Edna Umeh—a crossing guard at Lindley Middle School in Cobb County—was killed in the line of duty by a speeding driver. Her death galvanized the community and sparked county-wide changes to prevent similar tragedies in the future.

“Not only is Radarsign located in Cobb County, many of our employees live here,” said Charlie Robeson, co-founder and managing partner at Radarsign® , the manufacturer of the world’s first armored radar speed sign. “Ms. Umeh’s death was devastating to our community. Preventing this kind of fatal accident is exactly why Radarsign was founded, and it’s the reason we wanted to be part of the solution.”

In 2004, when Radarsign debuted the world’s first armored driver feedbacks signs, the goal was to make streets safer. With 55 million school children walking or biking to school each year, the founders focused on traffic calming products that would slow speeding drivers in school zones. These locations deal with dangerous combinations of speed, autopilot journeys and distracted driving, which create an unsafe environment for drivers, students and crossing guards—sometimes with fatal results.

Radarsign, America’s Official School Safety Partner™, donated two TC-600 solar powered signs to honor the work of Edna Umeh and her dedication to keeping children safe as they traveled to and from school. News stories about the donation, installation and dedication of the Radarsign radar speed signs can be accessed here:

Crossing guards have the most dangerous job in school. From 1993 to 2008, 120 crossing guards died on the job. That’s eight deaths each year. School zones can be made safer and Radarsign provides free resources to help schools create safe and effective school zone traffic plans.
